Common Ground

TrophyStreakLoading today's puzzle…

Fill a 3x3 grid with players who played for both teams.

How to play Common Ground

Common Ground is a daily 3x3 sports puzzle built on real rosters from hoopR NBA data by sportsdataverse, nflverse and openfootball. In NBA and NFL, every square needs a player who played for both the row team and the column team. In soccer, rows are nations and columns are international tournaments, and every square needs a player from that nation's squad at that tournament.

  1. Look at the team labeling each row and each column of the 3x3 grid.
  2. Pick a square, then search for a player who played for both of its teams using autocomplete.
  3. Pick a player to lock in your guess β€” each square gets one guess, nine in total.
  4. Each player can only be used once across the whole grid, so plan your overlaps.
  5. The grid finishes on its own once all nine squares have a guess.

Scoring

Each correct square is worth 11 points, and completing a perfect grid adds a 1-point bonus, for a maximum score of 100. Every square in the daily dataset has at least two valid real answers.

Tips

  • Start with the square you are most confident about to lock in an early correct answer.
  • Journeyman players who changed teams often are usually your best bet for tricky overlaps.
  • Remember a used player cannot be reused β€” save your surest answer for its hardest square.
  • If autocomplete returns no matches, the player likely never suited up for one of the two teams.
