Estimate
Drop one fearless guess and see how close you land.
How to play Estimate
Estimate gives you one real-world quantity each day โ something countable but not obvious, like the number of keys on a piano or the height of a famous landmark โ and asks for a single locked-in numeric guess. There are no second chances, so your instinct has to count.
- Read today's question and the unit you should answer in.
- Type your best numeric guess into the answer field.
- Submit your guess โ there is only one attempt per day.
- See the real answer and how close your estimate landed.
Scoring
Your score is 100 minus a percentage penalty based on how far your guess is from the true answer relative to its size. An exact guess scores 100, and the score falls smoothly to 0 as your guess gets further away.
Tips
- Break the quantity into smaller, more familiar parts before guessing the whole.
- Round numbers are fine โ the scoring rewards being close, not being precise to the digit.
- Think in orders of magnitude first: is this a number in the tens, hundreds or thousands?
- Trust a quick gut estimate over a long calculation you are unsure of.
FAQ
- Does everyone get the same Estimate question?
- Yes. The question is generated from the game date and identical for every player that day.
- Can I guess more than once?
- No, Estimate allows a single locked-in guess per day, which is part of the challenge.
- How is closeness scored?
- The penalty scales with how far off your guess is as a percentage of the true answer, so small misses barely cost you.
- Can I replay Estimate?
- Your first submitted guess is saved as the daily result. A new scored question arrives at midnight US Eastern.
