How to play Number Grid
Number Grid is a daily magic-square puzzle. You place the digits 1 through 9 once each into a 3x3 board so that every row, every column and both diagonals add up to the same target of 15. It is simple to describe and satisfying to balance.
- Tap an empty cell to cycle it through the numbers 1 to 9.
- Use each of the nine digits exactly once across the grid.
- Check that every row, column and the two diagonals add up to the target shown.
- Submit the grid once you believe it is a complete magic square.
Scoring
Your score is based on how many of the eight lines (three rows, three columns, two diagonals) total the target, scaled toward 100. Using any digit more than once caps your maximum score below full even if the totals are correct.
Tips
- Place the number 5 in the center first โ it appears in four of the eight winning lines.
- Pair large and small numbers across from each other to balance a row or column quickly.
- Check your diagonals early, since they are easy to overlook until the end.
- If a line total is off by exactly the difference between two numbers, try swapping them.
FAQ
- Does everyone get the same Number Grid target?
- Yes. The solution and target are generated from the game date, and the target is always 15.
- Can I repeat a digit in Number Grid?
- You can place a digit more than once while solving, but a repeated digit caps your final score below the maximum.
- Can I replay Number Grid?
- Your first submitted grid is saved as the daily result. A new scored grid arrives at midnight US Eastern.
- Is there more than one correct magic square?
- There can be, since rotations and reflections of a valid square also satisfy every line total.
